They exchanged a glance.
« We can… try to recover some of it, » one of them said cautiously.
I closed my eyes for a second, breathing slowly. Then I stood up.
« Okay, » I said, smoothing my dress with slightly unsteady hands. « Do all you can. »
Lila looked at me, worried. « Are you sure you’re okay? »
I nodded.
« I will be. »
And then, because I had no other choice, I turned around and walked towards the reception, as if everything was still perfect.
I smiled, raised my chin, and took a step back into the room.
What I didn’t know…
What I couldn’t have known…
It’s because somewhere, not far from where I was…
Daniel had already seen exactly what had happened.
And he was waiting for the right moment to make sure that the truth would not remain hidden.
A little later, the DJ tapped the microphone.
« Very well, everyone, » he said cheerfully. « We will now proceed to the speeches. »
There was some applause, some laughter as the guests settled back into their seats.
I exhaled slowly, smoothing my hands over my dress as Daniel found his way back to my side.
« Are you alright? » he asked me gently.
« I’m fine, » I replied. « Really. »
Her eyes lingered on mine for a second longer than usual.
Then he nodded.
« Good, » he said softly.
The initial speeches took place in a climate of uncertainty.
My maid of honor made everyone laugh. Daniel’s best friend told a slightly embarrassing story that made the whole room groan.
And for a moment… we almost had the impression that everything had returned to normal.
Then the DJ smiled and said, « And now, we would like to invite the groom’s mother to say a few words. »
My stomach tightened.
At the other end of the room, she stood gracefully, smoothing her dress as she walked towards the microphone.
If someone had been looking at her at that moment, they would have seen exactly what she wanted them to see.
A proud mother, a gracious person, and a woman who did nothing wrong.
She took the microphone with a sweet smile.
« Thank you, » she said.
« I just want to tell you how beautiful this day has been… »
She spoke first of Daniel—of his childhood and the pride she felt for the man he had become. The room softened with her words. Then her gaze fell on me.
« And to you, » she said, her tone gentle. « I truly respect you… »
I felt something tighten in my chest.
« And I love you. »
« STOP! » I heard my husband’s voice across the room.
For a second, I didn’t even realize what had happened.
Then I turned around.
Daniel was motionless. The whole room went silent.
« Daniel? » said his mother lightly.
He didn’t look at her right away.
Instead, he looked at me, just for a moment. Then he turned back to her.
« I wasn’t going to say anything tonight, » he said calmly. « Because I didn’t want to spoil this day any more than it already was. »
My heart started pounding.
What was he doing?
« But I’m not going to just sit here, » he continued, « and listen to something that isn’t true. »
His smile faded. « Daniel, I don’t understand… »
« There was a camera in the storage room, » he said.
A camera?
He turned to the DJ.
« Play it. »
There was a moment of hesitation. Then the screen behind the dance floor began to flash. The room went completely still.
And then…
I saw the storage room, the table and the cake, all intact.
A few seconds later, the door opened and my mother-in-law walked in.
A silent murmur spread through the room.
She looked around once, then she smiled.
« No… » I murmured.
On the screen, she moved closer.
Slowly… deliberately… she slid her hand over the cake, and the icing spread beneath her fingers.
Gasps echoed in the room.
Someone said, « Oh my God… »
But I couldn’t look away.
She pushed one of the layers aside, causing it to tip over.
Then she stepped back and smiled again.
The screen went dark. No one said a word.
I didn’t know when I had started trembling, but I could feel it now. Daniel’s voice could be heard.
« That’s who you are, » he said. « When you think nobody’s watching you. »
Her mother remained frozen.
« Daniel, I… »
« You didn’t just ruin a cake, » he continued. « You tried to ruin her day. »
He made a gesture towards me.
« Because she wasn’t the woman you wanted for me. »
All eyes were on my mother-in-law. People were exchanging glances and whispering. Her perfect image was beginning to crack.
« I chose her, » he said.
Then he held out his hand to me.
« I chose her, » he repeated. « And if you can’t respect that… »
He paused.
« You have no right to be part of our lives. »
For a moment, I felt as if time had stopped. Then, slowly, he turned away from her and looked at me instead.
« Hey, » he said softly. « Look at me. »
I did it.
And one way or another… despite everything…
I smiled.
The music started again a few minutes later.
It was quiet at first, then louder. People moved around and conversations resumed. Our reception had started to resemble a normal wedding again.
And as Daniel gently pulled me towards the dance floor, his hand never leaving mine, I realized something I hadn’t fully understood before…
I hadn’t just married the man I loved. I married someone who would stand by my side, no matter who stood against us.
Do you think Daniel did the right thing by exposing his mother’s true feelings in front of everyone?
