Her wedding day was supposed to be perfect… until a shocking event nearly shattered it. She forced a smile, unaware that her husband had already discovered the truth. But when his mother raised her glass to speak, he did something no one expected. What secret was he about to reveal?
I used to think that people exaggerated when they talked about knowing they had found the right person.
We hear it all the time, don’t we? That moment when everything clicks into place, when we feel safer and more certain than ever before.
I always thought that people only said that after things had worked out.
But with Daniel… I never had to convince myself of anything.
It was there from the beginning.
He noticed little things that people usually overlook, like the way I pushed food onto my plate when I was stressed and the way I stayed silent instead of getting angry.
« You haven’t eaten much today, » he said once, sliding his plate towards me before I even realized I was hungry.
I laughed. « I’m not that obvious. »
« You are, » he said, smiling. « But not to everyone. »
That was it, Daniel. He was the kindest man I’ve ever met.
And what I loved most about him was the fact that he chose me, every day, in small or big ways.
That is why, despite everything, I never doubted him.
Even when his mother made it clear from the very first moment… that she didn’t want me.
I still remember the first time I met her.
Daniel had been nervous about it, even though he tried not to show it.
« She can be a little… peculiar, » he said as we stood outside his house.
« A little? » I teased him.
He looked at me. « Just be yourself. That’s all that matters. »
I believed him.
When she opened the door, she had a smile on her lips.
« Oh, you must be her, » she said, her eyes studying me in a way that looked less like curiosity and more like evaluation.
I held out my hand to her. « I’m delighted to finally meet you. »
She hesitated for a second before squeezing it.
« Yes, » she said. « I’ve heard… a lot of things. »
Something about the break made my stomach clench.
But I told myself that I was just imagining it.
Inside, everything was immaculate. Not a single thing was out of place. It looked less like a home and more like a showroom.
We sat down to dinner, and for the first few minutes, everything seemed to be going well. She asked polite questions, and I gave polite answers.
Then the tone changed.
« So, » she said, taking a delicate sip of her wine, « what exactly are you doing again? »
I smiled. « I work in marketing. »
She tilted her head. « Ah. That must be… interesting. »
Here we go again. This break.
« I like it, » I said.
« I’m sure of it, » she replied, her lips curling slightly. « It’s just not what I had imagined for Daniel. »
I didn’t know what to say.
Daniel put down his fork. « Mom… »
“I mean,” she continued gently, “he’s always been so driven. So focused. We always thought he’d end up with someone who was like him.”
Looks like.
I nodded slowly, forcing a small smile.
« Well, » I said lightly, « life doesn’t always go according to expectations. »
« No, » she agreed, her gaze lingering on me. « That’s not the case. »
Things didn’t improve after that.
On the contrary, it has become more subtle and refined.
During family dinners, she complimented me in a way that didn’t resemble a compliment at all.
« Oh, that dress is… daring, » she said.
Or, as another example: « You’re so confident. I suppose you must be, in your field. »
Daniel noticed it, of course. He always noticed it.
« Don’t listen to her, » he told me one evening, holding me close as we lay in bed. « She’s like that with everyone. »
I wanted to believe him.
But deep down, I knew it wasn’t true.
The worst moment came the night we announced our engagement to her.
I was nervous, but I was also clinging to that small, hopeful part of me that thought… maybe this would change things. Maybe she’d see how serious we were. How happy we were. Maybe she’d finally accept me.
Daniel took my hand while we were sitting opposite her.
« We have an announcement to make, » he said.
She looked up, curious. « Oh? »
He smiled. « We’re going to get married. »
For a split second, his expression froze. Then, the smile returned.
« Oh, » she added. « How… sudden. »
« It’s not sudden, » Daniel replied gently. « We’ve been talking about it for a while. »
« Of course, » she said, nodding slowly. « I just thought you could take a little more time. Make sure everything is… correct. »
Her eyes turned towards me.
Then, as if it were the most natural thing in the world, she added…
« You remember Emily, don’t you? »
Daniel stiffened slightly. « Mom… »
« Such a charming girl, » she continued. « We always thought… »
She didn’t finish her sentence.
She didn’t need it.
I knew exactly where this was going to lead us.
