Part 2: My six-year-old nephew jumped onto my stomach, laughing and shouting, “Come out, baby! Hurry!”

Later, when the adrenaline had worn off and the hospital room settled into quiet, Daniel reached into his jacket pocket and handed me an envelope. It was legal-sized and heavy with the weight of its contents.

“What’s this?” I asked, still holding Leo close, my fingers tracing his tiny hand.

“I went back to the house while you were in surgery,” Daniel explained, his voice steady. “I got your things. And…” He paused, looking me in the eye. “I told my mother and sister if they ever come near you or Leo again, I’ll file a police report for endangerment and theft of your phone. They’ve been blocked. We’re done, Emily. It’s just us now.”

I blinked, not sure if I had heard him correctly. “You… you blocked them?”

“Yeah,” he said, a fierce protectiveness in his voice. “They’re gone, Emily. I won’t let them hurt you anymore. They tried to steal your voice. They tried to take control of our family. But this is our family now, and no one—no one—is going to come between us.”

Tears welled in my eyes as I looked down at Leo, feeling a surge of gratitude and love. He was so small, so fragile, but so perfect. He was my world now. Nothing else mattered.

I looked up at Daniel, who was watching me intently, waiting for my response. And for the first time since that moment in the living room, when everything had fallen apart, I felt at peace. The family I had been born into—those who had betrayed me—no longer had any hold on me.

I reached for the envelope, my hands trembling slightly as I opened it. Inside was a set of documents—papers confirming that Daniel had severed ties with his mother and sister, that we were no longer obligated to deal with their toxicity. I smiled, a quiet satisfaction filling my chest. It was over.

And just like that, the chapter of my life that had been filled with pain and betrayal closed. I had my family now. And I would do anything to protect them.

As I gazed at Leo’s peaceful face, I knew that the real story was only beginning. It was going to be a story of love, of survival, and of building a future where the people who mattered most were the ones who stood by me when it mattered most.

Together, we would be unstoppable.
